Hexagram 44

Coming to Meet

姤 · Gòu · Karşılaşma

Upper trigram: Heaven (strong, initiating) · Lower trigram: Wind and wood (gentle, penetrating)

Judgment

Wind beneath heaven: an unexpected encounter, an influence that appears suddenly. This hexagram reminds that everything seems innocent at the start, yet hidden influences can grow over time. Measuring and limiting what you meet rather than accepting it at once is suggested. Not leaving the door open to every attraction is the way to keep balance.

Beneath heaven the wind: coming to meet. The ruler spreads orders and proclaims them to the four quarters.

Meaning of the six lines (bottom to top)

  1. Line 1 (from the bottom)Fastening to a bronze brake: steadiness is good. Stopping a small tendency at its start prevents its growth later.
  2. Line 2 (from the bottom)A fish in the bag: no error, but not for guests. Keeping something within your own sphere and not spreading it is measured.
  3. Line 3 (from the bottom)No skin on the thighs, walking with difficulty: danger, but no great error. Knowing the limit of what you are content with helps.
  4. Line 4 (from the bottom)No fish in the bag: read as unfavourable. Cutting off from the people can lose a source of support.
  5. Line 5 (from the bottom)A melon wrapped in willow leaves: it holds hidden lines; later a gift comes from heaven. Keeping what is valuable quiet and private finds its answer in its own time.
  6. Line 6 (from the bottom)Meeting with the horns: embarrassment, but no error. Closing off in a narrow view can breed loneliness.
