Hexagram 33
Retreat
遯 · Dùn · Geri Çekilme
Upper trigram: Heaven (strong, initiating) · Lower trigram: Mountain (still, resting)
Judgment
The mountain beneath heaven: as heaven draws upward, the mountain is left behind. This hexagram says that retreat need not be defeat; it can be reading the time. When dark forces rise, stepping aside at the right moment is a way to preserve strength. In small things one may persist, but for large moves this may not be the fitting moment.
Image
The mountain stands beneath heaven. The noble-minded keep distance from the petty, not with hatred but with dignity.
Meaning of the six lines (bottom to top)
- Line 1 (from the bottom)Being at the tail of the retreat: dangerous. Not starting anything new when already late reduces harm.
- Line 2 (from the bottom)Bound firmly with yellow ox hide: no one can loosen it. A resolute commitment can be stronger than the wish to retreat.
- Line 3 (from the bottom)A retreat that is tied and held back: distress and danger. Caring for loyal helpers is fitting in this situation.
- Line 4 (from the bottom)Voluntary retreat: good for the mature, hard for the unrestrained. Being able to leave what you like brings freedom.
- Line 5 (from the bottom)A friendly retreat: steadiness is good. Leaving at the right time and in harmony protects hearts.
- Line 6 (from the bottom)A cheerful retreat: everything is favorable. For one freed in mind, withdrawing is the most natural way.
