Hexagram 30
The Clinging Fire
離 · Lí · Yapışan Ateş
Upper trigram: Fire (illuminating, clinging) · Lower trigram: Fire (illuminating, clinging)
Judgment
Fire upon fire: brightness needs something to cling to; a flame does not burn without fuel. This hexagram speaks of devotion, clarity and the importance of feeding the light. One who clings to what is right carries brightness; a docile and loyal stance, like tending a cow, is suggested. Radiance lasts only if it stays tied to a root that feeds it.
Image
Brightness rises twice: fire. The great person, carrying on this light, spreads their radiance to the four quarters.
Meaning of the six lines (bottom to top)
- Line 1 (from the bottom)The footprints are crisscrossed: advancing with care and respect. Calming the rush at the start of the day keeps errors away.
- Line 2 (from the bottom)Yellow light: great good. A light that stays balanced on the middle path gives a calm and fruitful brightness.
- Line 3 (from the bottom)The light of the setting sun: either you beat the drum and sing, or you lament growing old. Accepting the evening and using life well can be chosen.
- Line 4 (from the bottom)A flame that comes suddenly: it burns, dies and is cast out. A hasty flare is short-lived; a lasting light needs patience.
- Line 5 (from the bottom)Tears flow and sighs are drawn: read as favourable. Feeling the pain honestly can open the door to an inner renewal.
- Line 6 (from the bottom)The king sends him on a campaign: he punishes the leaders, not the captives. Being firm against wrongdoing yet forgiving toward people is suggested.
