Hexagram 23

Splitting Apart

剝 · Bō · Soyulma

Upper trigram: Mountain (still, resting) · Lower trigram: Earth (receptive, nourishing)

Judgment

The mountain upon the earth: a structure at the brink of collapse, a foundation slowly eroding. This hexagram describes a period when the old order dissolves and it is not the right time to advance. In such times, following the natural flow and waiting is measured rather than forcing a change of direction. A high place sinks once its base is hollowed; what remains is a gentle, patient stance.

Image

The mountain leans on the earth. Those in high places keep the foundation of their house secure by generously caring for those beneath.

Meaning of the six lines (bottom to top)

  1. Line 1 (from the bottom)The legs of the bed erode. A decay starting at the base can spread if not noticed early; care is needed.
  2. Line 2 (from the bottom)The frame of the bed erodes. Staying alert to threats to the structure that security rests on is suggested.
  3. Line 3 (from the bottom)No error even in an eroding setting: parting from those around you and returning to your own right path. This separation can be protective.
  4. Line 4 (from the bottom)The surface of the bed erodes, now reaching the person. Danger has come near; this line asks for urgent attention.
  5. Line 5 (from the bottom)Court ladies lined up like a school of fish: order is being restored. A harmonious order brings good in the end.
  6. Line 6 (from the bottom)A great fruit left uneaten: the mature one receives a carriage, while the small-minded person’s house is destroyed. What remains protects what stands.
