Hexagram 20
Contemplation
觀 · Guān · Seyir
Upper trigram: Wind and wood (gentle, penetrating) · Lower trigram: Earth (receptive, nourishing)
Judgment
Wind over the earth: a contemplation that wanders everywhere and looks at everything. This hexagram resembles the dignified, sincere moment when hands are washed but the offering is not yet made. A person who looks with wonder and respect carries an influence that spreads outward. Observing carefully first and acting afterward is the wisdom of this time.
Image
The wind moves over the earth. The ancient kings toured the regions, observed the people and offered them teaching.
Meaning of the six lines (bottom to top)
- Line 1 (from the bottom)A childlike look: shallow and simple. Not an error for the small-minded, but for the mature, staying on the surface may be a shortcoming.
- Line 2 (from the bottom)Looking through a crack in the door. A narrow viewpoint may show looking only at your own sphere; widening the view is worth considering.
- Line 3 (from the bottom)Contemplating your own life: advancing or retreating. Reviewing your own actions shows the right direction.
- Line 4 (from the bottom)Contemplating the light of the realm: it is fitting for a capable person to be a ruler’s guest. Turning to an environment where worth is valued may be right.
- Line 5 (from the bottom)Contemplating your own life, free of error for the mature. Seeing the echo of your own influence and judging it honestly is suggested.
- Line 6 (from the bottom)Contemplating beyond your own life: toward the lives of others, toward the whole. This view can open a broad horizon without error.
Question for reflection
What is worth looking at more closely right now, without hurrying?
